Matters needing attention in application of metal powder coatings

1. Coating methods of metal powder coatings
In most cases, the electrostatic spray gun is used for coating, because this type of product contains metal pigment. When using the electrostatic spray gun, the excellent grounding of the system should be ensured, and a lower electrostatic voltage and powder output should be set together to prevent ignition during spraying. The effect of coating is closely related to the setting, quality or brand of spray gun. After long-term spraying, there may be a lot of metal powder accumulated at the discharge needle of the spray gun, so the constructors are required to clean up the discharge needle on time.
2. Gloss of metal powder coatings
In most cases, because of the great error, it is not recommended to use glossmeter to measure the gloss of metal appearance coating, but only use visual contrast method to judge whether it is the same as the standard sample.
3. Recoverability of metal powder coatings
As for the powder made by dry mixing method, because the separation phenomenon will occur in the process of spraying and recovery, there will be a certain difference in the metal pigment content between the recovered powder and the new powder, which may lead to different appearance of the film and color deviation. This is determined by the different properties between metallic pigments and powder particles. Experts suggest that the ratio of recovered powder to new powder should be at least 1:4. Suppose that the powder coating made by the bonding fixation method can be used from the beginning because the ratio between the metal pigment and the powder particles is relatively fixed.
4. Gloss coating of metal powder coatings
It has the following benefits to spray the gloss coating on the metal powder coating: enhance the stone strike resistance of the metal powder coating; add the beautiful effect of the metal powder coating; completely handle the metal pigment; and improve the weather resistance of the metal powder coating. In order to ensure the appearance effect of the coating, the workpiece sprayed for the first time should not be polluted. Therefore, the general demand for fully automated spraying line and two sets of independent spray room for coating respectively. It is recommended not to spray the coating under normal circumstances. It only needs to be used when the requirements are very high, such as: advanced household appliances, car wheel hub and outdoor use (guarantee weatherability), etc.
No matter the powder is made by dry mixing method or adhesive fixation method, it can not completely deal with the problem of metal pigment erasability. The only way to deal with the abradability is to spray a transparent coating on the metal powder coating.
